ICC ASSESSMENT

ICC (International Certificate of Competence)

Many countries require visiting yachtsmen to hold a certificate of competence. If you are planning to sail or cruise within Europe and the Mediterranean the RYA recommends skippers hold the International Certificate of Competence (ICC). This is particularly true in Croatia and now in parts of Greece as well as Turkey where laws have recently changed and skippers are required to hold a valid ICC (International Certificate of Competence) or RYA Day Skipper certificate or higher.   If you are planning a holiday in this region you should now check requirements with your charterer or booking agent

HOW TO GO ABOUT AN ASSESSMENT

First of all are you able to navigate?

If you can undertake the basics of chart work,  and can sail, we can assess your overall ability in a few hours and approve your competence.

We sign off the paperwork and the RYA issue you with the ICC.

If you are not confident with navigation, we will do a short informal pre assessment and advise you of what you will need to achieve before undertaking the full assessment. Our instructor will also offer refresher and ‘upgrade’ navigation to ensure you are up to standard.

If you have not taken any courses in navigation or used charts to plot courses etc, then you will need to take the RYA 'Day Skipper' shore based course at least.

We would be pleased to arrange a shore based course for you should you require.  Bob Lambert, one of our associates, is responsible for running Day Skipper courses along with Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore courses.

further to navigation skills you should have adequate boat craft as described in the ICC assessment which can be downloaded from the RYA website ICC Application Form.

Candidates can also buy the  RYA ICC Handbook to guide them through the requirements although the essence is covered by the syllabus, and the book is probably more appropriate to new sailors.

We undertake the assessment  in a relaxed and informal way and suggest you set out to treat this as a day cruise with family or friends.

If you do not have your own boat we will arrange for the hire of one from Eastwood Whelptons.

We can work with up to four candidates at a time, which is an inexpensive way to proceed.

(see prices)  If you do not have anyone else interested in an assessment, we would encourage you to bring along family or friends instead, and simply treat it as a day out on the river. You will need the crew in any case!
